General Dentistry

We offer a complete range of general dentistry services, including hygiene appointments (teeth cleanings), sealants, fluoride treatments and space maintainers. Along with regular brushing and flossing, these services are designated to help prevent dental disease. We recommend all patients schedule a hygiene appointment every six months. Our dentists may recommend more frequent appointments based on patient age, lifestyle, risk factors and general oral and dental health.

Dental Hygiene appointment (teeth cleaning)

Here is what your dental hygiene appointment will include:

  • Soft tissue exam and oral screening to identify changes in mouth tissues or signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease screening, including a measurement of the pocket depth.
  • Dental exam to diagnose any cavities or other dental conditions that need attention.
  • X-rays of your teeth unless you had x-rays recently. A full set of x-rays should be taken every 3-5 years, and bite wing x-rays should be taken every year. X-rays help locate disease and decay not visible by the naked eye.
  • Results of the exam, and answers to questions about recommended treatment or dental health in general.
  • Preventative cleaning consisting of cleaning and polishing teeth to remove plaque, which is sticky film of acid producing bacteria on teeth that causes tooth decay and gum disease. proper flossing techniques will be demonstrated and questions about cavity prevention and oral health care will be answered.
  • Non-surgical treatment of gum disease (deep cleaning), if needed
  • Use of chemotherapeutic agents (antibiotics) for non-surgical treatment of gum disease - Arrestin (if needed)

Sealants

Sealants are a clear material that dentists apply to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent cavities by "sealing out" plaque and food. The material is painted onto chewing surfaces where it bonds and hardens in minutes. Sealants are frequently used with  children and teens because decay is more common early in life.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatment usually is given once a year to children aged 14 and under during scheduled dental exam and hygiene appointments. Fluoride varnish, which  is simply brushed on the teeth, also can be recommended for adult patients with high risk factors.

Space Maintainers

Space maintainers hold the place of a baby tooth that a child has prematurely lost due to decay or injury. A space maintainer may be either a band or crown attached to another tooth. A dentist will remove the space maintainer once the permanent tooth starts to grow.  If a space maintainer is not placed in the vacant space, surrounding teeth can move and take over that space. The result is a permanent tooth that may come in crooked or crowded. This may lead to difficulties in chewing and talking.
